Osgood Perkins Slams Netflix’s Monster Over Portrayal of His Father

Longlegs director Osgood Perkins recently slammed the Netflix series Monster: The Ed Gein Story, partly due to how the show has portrayed his father.

What did Osgood Perkins say about Monster?

In a recent interview with TMZ, Perkins was asked if he’d watched any of the show, which features his father, legendary actor Anthony Perkins, in it. Perkins said he “wouldn’t watch it with a 10-foot pole,” and that he’s unhappy with how streaming platforms have taken the true-crime genre and turned it into “glamorous and meaningful content,” and worries how “overlords” are reshaping culture.

Perkins went on to criticize how the true-crime genre is as a whole, saying it has become “increasingly devoid of context and that the Netflix-ization of real pain [ie the authentic human experiences wrought by ‘actual events’] is playing for the wrong team.”

In the series, Perkins’ father is played by Joey Pollari. The show briefly focuses on Anthony Perkins as he prepares to star in Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic 1960 movie Psycho, as well as Perkins’ own struggles with being a closeted gay man. The show explores this dichotomy as Perkins, who played killer Norman Bates in the movie, feels like a “monster” as he struggles with his sexuality.

In real life, Perkins’ sexuality remained an open secret of sorts throughout his career. Despite it, he remained married to Barry Berenson, Osgood’s mother, throughout his life. Perkins died in 1992, at the age of 60, from complications due to AIDS.
