Disney+ Will Air a Special Episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian Season 2

Disney+ Will Air a Special Episode of Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian Season 2

Shortly after The Mandalorian wrapped up its second season last December, Disney+ released a 70-minute making-of documentary under its Disney Gallery banner. However, the special conspicuously lacked any insight into how the filmmakers pulled off the season’s biggest reveal, which notably featured a digitally de-aged Mark Hamill reprising his role as Luke Skywalker in the action-packed finale. Now that fans have had seven whole months to catch up, the streamer is finally delving into this instantly iconic Star Wars moment. Next month, Disney+ will debut a bonus episode of Disney Gallery that focuses entirely on Luke’s surprising return (via SuperHeroHype).

The Mandalorian’s season 2 finale, “The Rescue,” wasn’t the first time Lucasfilm utilized de-aging tech to re-create Hamill’s Return of the Jedi-era visage. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker previously accomplished this feat in 2019. Regardless, his appearance in the episode was much more extensive this time around. The new episode will explore the “cutting-edge” strategies the producers employed to bring the famed Jedi Master back to screens. This means we will learn how they personally worked with Hamill to develop a “authentic and fitting” facsimile of his ‘80s countenance.

Presumably, the episode will feature interviews with writer/showrunner Jon Favreau, executive producer Dave Filoni, and director Peyton Reed. It also seems likely that we will hear from Max Lloyd Jones, the body double for young Luke. And who knows? Hamill will probably have some thoughts to share as well.

Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian – Making of the Season 2 Finale will hit Disney+ on August 25.
