Starring Cecily Strong as Melissa, the untitled series follows the story of a couple on a backpacking trip designed to reinvigorate their relationship when they discover the magical town of Schmigadoon, in which everyone acts as if they’re in a studio musical from the 1940s. They then discover that they can’t leave until they find “true love.”

Key is set to portray the role of Melissa’s long-term pragmatic partner named Josh, the last person who wants to be stuck in this magical town. Meanwhile, Cumming, Armisen, and Chenoweth will be playing the roles of Mayor Menlove, Reverend Layton, and Mildred Layton, respectively.

The Apple TV+ series is written by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, who both worked together on Despicable Me. On top of writing and showrunning, Paul will also write all of the original music. It will be directed by Barry Sonnenfeld with Strong, Caroline Maroney, Micah Frank, and Rose Lam set as producers and Daurio as consulting producer. The series will be executive produced by Broadway Video’s Andrew Singer.
