Salazar, Keener, Jacinto join Netflix’s Brand New Cherry Flavor
Deadline has brought word that Netflix’s series adaptation of the cult horror-thriller novel Brand New Cherry Flavor is officially in the works and has already begun building its cast with Rosa Salazar (Alita: Battle Angel), Catherine Keener (Get Out) and Manny Jacinto.
Based on the novel Brand New Cherry Flavor: A Novel of the Occult by Todd Grimson, the story follows Lisa Nova (Salazar), an aspiring film director in the sun-drenched but seamy world of 1990 Los Angeles who embarks on a mind-altering journey from the streets of Beverly Hills to the forests of Brazil on a journey of supernatural revenge.
Salazar will lead a cast that includes Keener, who also stars on Showtime’s Kidding, Jacinto, whose breakout role on The Good Place is coming to an end with the series finale on January 30, Eric Lange (Escape at Dannemora) and Jeff Ward, also the star of an ending series on Marvel’s Agents of Shield.
The horror-thriller is being written by Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion (Billions, Channel Zero) and will be executive produced by Antosca through his banner Eat the Cat alongside Zion. Arkasha Stevenson, who helmed the third season of Channel Zero, is set to direct the pilot for the adaptation.
Cherry Flavor will mark the fourth collaboration between Salazar and the streaming service after the movies Bird Box and The Kindergarten Teacher and the animated comedy series Big Mouth. Keener has been finding large success on the small screen over the past few years with Showtime’s Kidding and Amazon’s Forever and Modern Love.
