Bees

Alan and Nadia debated if they were in hell or if they were the same person. She found one of the first games she designed in Alan’s living room. He hated the game because it was too hard, so Nadia played it. She asked Alan how he died the first time, but he couldn’t remember. Since Nadia remembered how she died, she felt this could be a clue since it was a known unknown.

Nadia took Alan to see Ruth. Alan didn’t want to see a therapist since he feared people thinking he’s crazy. Ruth told Alan about Nadia’s mother. She had shattered all the mirrors in her house since reflection was proof of existence. On the way back, Alan and Nadia discovered they were both allergic to bees. People fled a swarm of bees in the subway station, and Alan and Nadia died.

When Alan was asleep, Nadia took off with his shoes to give them to Horse. She gave Horse her kruggerand, the last of 150 gold coins that her Holocaust-surviving grandparents had invested in. She took Horse to the bodega where she remembered seeing Alan on her first night.

When she came back to her apartment, Alan had cleaned. He put up old pictures of Nadia and her mother that Nadia had kept under her bed. She threw him out of the apartment. Later, at Ruth’s, Nadia choked on some chicken.
