I haven’t yet seen anything from Ben Wheatley. Not Kill List or Sightseers. I’ve heard mixed, but passionate, responses to both, which tells me one of these days I need to make sure and see them. In the meantime, he’s already got another film on the way in the form of a English Civil War paranoid thriller called A Field in England.
Here’s the story:
England during the English Civil War. A small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by two men: O’Neil and Cutler. O’Neil (Michael Smiley), an alchemist, forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.
Sounds interesting enough to me, but this new trailer for the film seems to be selling some sort of a paranoid gimmick rather than a story.
Of course, there was already a more conventional trailer for the film, which you can watch below. I’m definitely intrigued, but at the same time need to catch up on Wheatley’s other work. Thankfully Kill List, Down Terrace and The ABCs of Death are both available on Netflix Instant so I don’t have to look too far to get started.
A Field in England hits UK theaters on July 5, no telling when Picturehouse will bring it stateside.
