The Academy has decided this year to debut a series of trailers leading up to the 2012 Oscars and the first, titled “Off the Grid”, has just arrived featuring the likes of William Fichtner, Josh Duhammel, Vinnie Jones, Megan Fox, Robin Williams and, of course, this year’s host Billy Crystal. I don’t know about you, but the idea of Megan Fox being involved in a promotion for the Oscars seems a bit… Strange? Wrong? Contradictory?

A press release accompanying the trailer quotes Academy Chief Marketing Officer Christina Kounelias saying, “We wanted to try something a little bit different this year instead of a traditional, clip-based piece. The trailer has a fun twist that conveys how excited everyone is to have Billy back.”

Popular video website Funny or Die was involved in the commercial’s production and it will have a one-month run in more than 2,000 theaters beginning January 6. “Our team had a great time working with the Academy and joining forces with Billy [Crystal] again,” said Mike Farah, Funny Or Die’s president of production. “We think the trailer really speaks to the excitement around this year’s Oscars, and Funny Or Die was honored to be a part of it.”

If you’re wondering what Farah is referring to when he says he is working with Billy Crystal “again”, it’s because the site produced the comedy spoof “When Harry Met Sally 2” which featured Crystal alongside Helen Mirren and featuring the many talents of Rob Reiner, Adam Scott, Mike Tyson, Rob Riggle, Maya Rudolph, Jennifer Crystal Foley, Mike O’Malley and Josh Fadem. I’ve included that video below as well.

The Oscars premiere on February 26 and I will be here to live blog the entire event, but for now have a look at this first trailer as I’m sure more are on the way.
