Chris Hemsworth just dropped the first look at Extraction 3, and it confirms a major returning face. The actor revealed filming has officially begun for the Netflix sequel alongside a key co-star and the franchise’s director.
Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba reunite with Sam Hargrave for Extraction 3 filming
Chris Hemsworth confirmed on X that Extraction 3 has officially begun filming. The actor shared a behind-the-scenes photo alongside co-star Idris Elba and director Sam Hargrave, captioning it “E3 Here we go!” As a result, Netflix’s blockbuster action sequel is now shooting across Sydney and the New South Wales South Coast.
The production stars Hemsworth as black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake, with Elba and Golshifteh Farahani also reprising their roles. Meanwhile, David Weil wrote the screenplay for the third instalment, which Sam Hargrave returns to direct. Additionally, filming is expected to create 450 local jobs and inject an estimated $127 million into the state’s economy.
Hargrave expressed his excitement about the project’s ambitious scope. “Our goal has always been to push the boundaries of action filmmaking, and with Extraction 3, we’re taking our biggest swing yet,” Hargrave said. Notably, the franchise draws from the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo and Fernando León González.
Producer Patrick Newall highlighted the broad government support behind the production. “This is a big movie and these invaluable partners have all helped make our production here possible,” Newall said. Furthermore, the project receives backing from the Australian Government’s Location Offset and the Made in NSW Fund administered by Screen NSW.
NSW Arts Minister John Graham also welcomed the cast and crew to the state. “We welcome this high calibre cast and crew filming Extraction 3 in Sydney and on the South Coast,” Graham said (via Variety Australia). Similarly, Netflix’s APAC Director of Production Policy, Debra Richards, noted that federal and state support remains vital to strengthening Australia’s film landscape and building sustainable professional pathways.
The original Extraction debuted on Netflix in 2020 and became one of the platform’s biggest releases. Extraction 2 then followed in 2023, with both films appearing on Netflix’s Most Popular English Films List.
