The film promises to be a heartfelt tale, one that happens to be narrated by a witty and philosophical dog named Enzo, voiced by Kevin Costner. The film follows Enzo and his best friend and owner, Denny Swift, played by Milo Ventimiglia (This is Us).

As an aspiring Formula One race car driver, Denny and as he and his best friend navigate the journey of life and the loves of his life. This includes his wife, Eve, played by Amanda Seyfried (Mama Mia! Here We Go Again), their young daughter, Zoe, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong (IT: Chapter Two). Gary Cole (Veep), Kathy Baker (I’m Sorry) and Martin Donovan (Big Little Lies) also star.

Simon Curtis (Goodbye Christopher Robin) will direct the adaptation, with Neil Moritz producing alongside Tania Landau and Patrick Dempsey, who at one point was attached to star in the film. Universal picked up the book in 2009 when Dempsey (Grey’s Anatomy) was in talks to star, but development took its time. Eventually, Dempsey stepped aside and the project stalled on the development track. The film is based on the best-selling 2008 novel of the same name by Garth Stein.
