‘The Prince and Me’ Movie Review (2004)

Earlier this year we suffered through Mandy Moore’s Chasing Liberty, which I generously gave a C+, and now the roles are flipped, but the story remains the same, only thing is that this time, it seems to work, sort of.

Prince doesn’t want to be a prince, hides the fact he is a prince, meets a girl, falls in love, she finds out he is a prince and yells, “You lied to me!” Couldn’t be more cliche right? Of course not, but through it all Prince and Me never takes itself too seriously and offers up good fun for a couple hours.

Where other films such as Chasing Liberty failed The Prince and Me succeeds and will certainly be a big hit with its target audience and then some.

It was also a pleasure to see Julia Stiles redeem herself from, what I thought was her worst acting ever in Mona Lisa Smile, as she returns as the cute girl we know her to be with that quality that seems to radiate from the screen and give me the jitters. Now obviously she does distract me from some of the things about this movie that will make it appear to others as bad, but I am just being honest.

Just as well Luke Mably recognizable from last year’s hit horror flick 28 Days Later, does a fair job with the role as the prince, in such a way that you are able to tolerate him and his involvement in the story line.

Most often in movies like this you know exactly what is going to happen and you can look forward to the cheesy ending that has been told since the beginning of time, and this one delivers on all those. The only difference is that this cast is able to bring enough life to this film to make it tolerable.

The Prince and Me is sure to do well in theaters with its target audience, and just maybe a little word of mouth will toss a few extra moviegoer dollars its way.
