Anne Hathaway, fresh from her Golden Globe win for Les Misérables, is set to headline a reimagining of the Shakespearean comedy The Taming of the Shrew. The Wrap reports that the project will set the action in Italy in the middle of the 20th century.
Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady) will provide the screenplay. No director has been announced.
Hathaway, who also starred this year in The Dark Knight Rises, would likely play the leading role of Katherina, the play’s titular “shrew,” whose life is overturned when she’s forced into marriage with the silver-tongued Petruchio.
Debra Hayward is producing through Working Title Films.
