First look at Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Joely Richardson in The Aspern Papers

Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Vikings) and Joely Richardson (Maggie) star in the adaptation of The Aspern Papers and ARRI Media International has given us our first look at the upcoming period piece. Based on the novella by Henry James, the film from Summerstorm Entertainment and Princeps Films reunites The Tudors co-stars Meyers and Richardson who portrayed King Henry VIII and Queen Catherine Parr, respectively (seen in the image above). It is the feature film debut of French director Julien Landais. Landias is set to produce the film alongside Gabriela Bacher. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Jean Pavans and Hannah Bhuiya.

The film also stars Academy Award winner Vanessa Redgrave (Julia), Lois Robbins (Blowtorch) and Poppy Delevingne (Kingsmen: The Golden Circle). Cohen media Group will distribute the film in the U.S while ARRI Media will introduce to foreign buyers at EFM in Berlin.

Variety provides a detailed description of the story that will surely be a must-watch for fans of romantic period pieces:

“Set in Venice in the late 19th century, The Aspern Papers tells the story of an ambitious editor (Meyers), who is obsessed by the romantic poet Jeffrey Aspern and his short and wildly romantic life. Travelling from the U.S. to Venice, he is determined to get his hands on the letters Aspern wrote to his lover and muse (Redgrave), who ferociously guards their secrets. Richardson plays Redgrave’s niece.”

The film is currently in post-production with a release date set for sometime in 2018.
