Illumination Entertainment to Develop Clifford the Big Red Dog

Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment have plans to bring Norman Bridwell’s Clifford the Big Red Dog to the big screen as a live action/CGI hybrid. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Matt Lopez (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) has been brought aboard to provide the screenplay.

Bridwell created the character of Clifford, a dog who started a runt but grew to gigantic proportions, in 1963 and the dog and his owner, Emily Elizabeth, have appeared in dozens of children’s books over the years as well as in a television series with the late John Ritter providing the voice of Clifford.

The Clifford announcement comes on the heels of the tremendous box office success of Illumination’s The Lorax earlier this year. As with that film, Illumination founder Chris Meledandri will produce, this time teaming with Deborah Forte.
