Christoph Waltz to Direct, Star In ‘Worst Marriage in Georgetown’

As covered by Jordan recently in his look at The Water Diviner — or much worse. Where will Christoph Waltz stand in the line-up? It remains to be seen, but he’s going to take a shot at it anyway as he stars and now makes his Hollywood directorial debut with the true-crime drama, Worst Marriage in Georgetown.

This is not the first time Waltz has directed, as he previously helmed the TV movie Wenn man sich traut, which he also co-wrote, back in 2000. It is, however, his first time in the chair after his two Oscar wins and people appreciating his talents, beyond his native tongue, following 2008’s Inglorious Basterds where he received his first Oscar. The deal for Worst Marriage in Georgetown comes from Cannes, with Voltage Pictures now on board to fully finance and produce.

The film is based on “The New York Times” article of the same name by Franklin Foer, and comes from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize-winner David Auburn (Proof). Waltz, in addition to directing, stars as Albrect Muth, whose described as “an eccentric social climber who seduced and married a wealthy older widow, Viola Drath.” Albrect and Viola threw their fair share of lavish parties, it seems, attended by the most influential politicians from around the world. All this is even though Muth apparently faked his background and became a D.C. luminary. When a murder is uncovered, however, Muth’s ethics and public personification begins to crumble before him. The part of Viola has yet to be cast.

The production start is not only set, but has a specific date announced: October 12, 2015. Waltz jumps from his work on Deadline]
