‘Star Trek 3’ Director Shortlist Includes Rupert Wyatt, Duncan Jones, and Morten Tyldum

I really want a good Star Trek movie. So far, this rebooted, J.J. Abrams helmed version of the Enterprise has done next to nothing for me. Star Trek Into Darkness was particularly disheartening. However, these movies have been making decent money, so this is the direction we will continue to go. Because Abrams is off waking up the force (which really does not like someone waking it up; it’s quite cranky), a new director is needed to take over.

For awhile, screenwriter Roberto Orci was going to make his directorial debut with Star Trek 3, but he recently dropped out of the project, just staying on as a producer. Deadline is reporting Paramount has a shortlist of five directors they are looking at. On the top of the list is Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), with Morten Tyldum (The Imitation Game), Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code), Just Lin (Fast Five and 6), and Daniel Espinosa (Safe House). Edgar Wright was the first name that emerged when Orci left, but he is not among the names in the new report.

The only one of these five men to give me any sort of interest is Duncan Jones. Moon remains one of the best science fiction films in the past decade, and Source Code, though flawed, is very interesting and entertaining. Although, I would rather see him tackle his own original sci-fi work than jump on to Trek. He is working on the Warcraft movie, so I guess he has already jumped the shark a bit.

The other four are perfectly fine directors, but I do not get any sort of personality from their styles. I want Star Trek to have a fresh, intelligent voice, and these names make me feel like they will just be doing the same old thing Trek has been doing for the last two films. Do any of these names interest you when it comes to directing Star Trek 3?

UPDATE: Duncan Jones has tweeted saying he won’t be directing.
