Yesterday, we got our Into the Woods on four covers from Entertainment Weekly. Along with the covers, EW released some production photos from the film too. However, the bigger release is that of a new featurette about the film, which actually features a tiny bit of singing. The first trailer really kept that a secret by having no singing in it whatsoever. It always bothers me when studios are afraid of saying, “Yes, our film is a musical.” I know there is an anti-musical bias out there, but duping people into seeing your musical will only make them angrier.
Of course, we still do not get a lot of singing in the new video. We hear very brief snippets of the opening prologue, as well as Meryl Streep with a few lines from “Stay with Me“. At least they are getting the word out there. The featurette also contains brief interviews with driector Rob Marshall, composer Stephen Sondheim, book writer James Lapine, and members of the cast, saying the typical things you here in interviews like that.
You can watch the new featurette and check out the pictures below. Is this doing anything to up your anticipation for the film? I mean, this is one of those films I have been wanting for years, and even if I have my reservations about it, I still want it to be great.
Into the Woods based on the Tony-winning original musical by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, surrounds a baker and his wife’s quest to break a witch’s curse in order to start a family. Along the way, they encounter several well-known fairy tale characters, and together they learn what happens after “happily ever after”.
