Making the rounds while promoting Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Gary Oldman, who starred as Jim Gordon in Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight trilogy, was asked about the forthcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and he hits the nail on the head when it comes to the issues the film is going to face from audiences, particularly due to the addition of Batman to the scenario:
“They want to keep it going. Of course they do. But, it’s Superman yeah? Batman and Superman together? We shall see.
“The thing about Nolan, there was some grounding of reality to it. In our trilogy, and as fantastical and as big as The Joker was, it was based [on reality]… we could relate to it.
“But now we’ve got a Batman and we’ve got a guy who can fly who’s an alien?! We’ll have to see…It’s got big shoes to fill.”
For fans of the comics this likely won’t be an issue, but it may become an issue for non-comic book fans that have grown adjusted to Nolan’s Batman trilogy, especially without a reintroduction of Batman as a new character. Does it hurt the film that Ben Affleck will simply be introduced as a Bruce Wayne/Batman that already exists, but is a different Batman than the one played by Christian Bale?
I understand it’s not at all fair to compare the two and the two films and, in this case, franchises should be able to stand independent of one another, but will audiences have a hard time separating the two? [Yahoo UK]
