Lee Daniels’ The Butler dropped $500,000 from Sunday’s estimates for a weekend total of $16.5 million, bringing the Oscar contender’s cume to $51.7 after two weeks. The film still remains at #1 for the second weekend in a row followed by We’re the Millers, which continues to perform well and is nearing $100 million domestically after only dropping 27% this week.
Coming in third, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones didn’t budge from its estimated $9.3 million opening as the film brought in a grand total of $14 million in five days. Not exactly the kind of opening that suggests a sequel is in order. I wonder if plans to begin production on The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes in October are still underway.
In the fourth slot, Edgar Wright‘s The World’s End dropped a smidge from an estimated $8.9 million to a final of $8.7 million.
Coming in seventh was Lionsgate’s well-reviewed, but little seen new horror, You’re Next, which was spot on Sunday predictions with a $7 million opening. The film came in with a “B-” CinemaScore so I don’t expect it to pick up much steam over the coming weeks. It’s strange how the horror community will embrace one film, but ignore the next and then complain when they’re greeted with low-rent PG-13 trash from the studios.
Finally, in tenth position and the fourth film in our Box Office Challenge this weekend, Woody Allen‘s Blue Jasmine expanded to 1,283 theaters and finished with $3.9 million, $400,000 less than Sunday’s estimates.
That said, I’ve listed the current top ten for both leaderboards directly below, but you can see the full list of rankings right here and for the complete box office top ten and points awarded for this weekend specifically click here.
