Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Inherent Vice looks to be filling out nicely as Reese Witherspoon, Martin Short and Jena Malone have all joined the cast.
For those with good memories, Witherspoon was at one time going to play the role that eventually went to Amy Adams in The Master. Now she’s finally going to be able to take part in a PTA film and opposite her Walk the Line co-star no less, Joaquin Phoenix, who plays the lead character in the adaptation of Thomas Pynchon’s novel.
The story follows 1960s stoner P.I. Larry “Doc” Sportello (Phoenix) who is hired by an ex-girlfriend to investigate the disappearance of her wealthy lover. Owen Wilson and Benicio Del Toro also star.
I have to assume Witherspoon is taking the role once thought to belong to Charlize Theron, which isn’t confirmed but one can assume would be that of the ex-girlfriend, Shasta Hepworth.
As for the roles Short and Malone will play, The Wrap reports Malone will play a former drug addict who asks Sportello for help, while Short’s small role is being kept under wraps.
Filming is expected to begin this month with Warner Bros. releasing in 2014. [Deadline / The Wrap]
