2013 Oscar Nominees: ‘Lincoln’ Leads the Way With 12 Nominations

This morning, at 5:38 AM PST the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 2013 Oscar nominations. Making the announcement will be the show’s host, Seth MacFarlane, and Emma Stone and there were certainly a few surprises.

I’m sure the one that will have people scratching their heads more than any other is the nomination for Benh Zeitlin (Beasts of the Southern Wild) over both Kathryn Bigelow (Zero Dark Thirty) and Ben Affleck (Argo) for Best Director. If you ask me, it’s a travesty of an oversight, but I’ll get into that a bit more in my reaction piece, which will also be touching on the fact The Intouchables somehow misses out on a Foreign Language nomination.

Looking over my predictions, I went 80 for 107 (74.7%) and only got the Visual Effects category 100% correct. My worst category, surprisingly (to me at least), was Best Director where I only got two of the five nominees correct as the Academy went with Michael Haneke, Zeitlin and David O. Russell instead of Bigelow, Affleck and Tom Hooper (Les Miserables). I’ll have a little more on that, however, in my reaction piece, which I am working on right now.

Lincoln led the way with 12 nominations, followed closely by Life of Pi with 11. Here’s the nomination count breakdown:

  1. Lincoln – 12 nominations
  2. Life of Pi – 11 nominations
  3. Les Mis̩rables Р8 nominations
  4. Silver Linings Playbook – 8 nominations
  5. Argo – 7 nominations
  6. Amour – 5 nominations
  7. Django Unchained – 5 nominations
  8. Skyfall – 5 nominations
  9. Zero Dark Thirty – 5 nominations
  10. Anna Karenina – 4 nominations
  11. Beasts of the Southern Wild – 4 nominations
  12. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – 3 nominations
  13. The Master – 3 nominations
  14. Flight – 2 nominations
  15. Snow White and the Huntsman – 2 nominations
