Morning 5: ‘Hobbit’ Trilogy Dated and Titled, ‘Avatar’ Sequels Update and Pine Talks ‘Trek 2’

1.) The Hobbit movies have their schedules set as the newly announced third film has its date. The series will begin with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey this year, arriving on December 14, 2012. The second film has given its name to the third and will now be called The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, arriving on December 13, 2013 and the trilogy will conclude with The Hobbit: There and Back Again on July 18, 2014.

2.) There has been a lot of talk regarding the potential for a fourth Avatar film as James Cameron gears up to film Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 back-to-back. Most of that came from a Cameron quote saying, “I’m making Avatar 2, Avatar 3, maybe Avatar 4,” which was then followed by word Sigourney Weaver was preparing to shoot all three films at once. Turns out that fourth film isn’t happening… not yet at least.

Producer Jon Landau tells the Courier Post Online, “We [are] doing two back-to-back, but not a third.” So there. [Courier Post]

3.)While the still-untitled Star Trek sequel is still… well… untitled and without a single piece of promotional material. That doesn’t change the fact it’s on the way and set to hit theaters on May 17, 2013. Chris Pine, however, has shared a few thoughts on the film talking with Total Film, giving us the following update:

“We’re not making Batman. That’s not our deal… There’s comedy, which I think J.J. [Abrams] does a great job of, but, like the first one, there’s some serious issues being dealt with. And I’d say the threat is even greater in this one.

“The force [the Enterprise crew] are met with is much more frightening. It’s relentlessly action-packed and in terms of character development it goes places you’d never expect. The arc is huge for all the characters. It’s a really big story – I can’t hype it enough!”

4.) Continuing the trend of people talking about movies that haven’t come out yet, Henry Cavill discussed playing Superman in next summer’s Man of Steel saying, “[I]t’s a modernization of the character and a very realistic view of one, obviously, very fantastic individual. It’s an unreal situation, but it’s approached from a very practical viewpoint. We wanted to make the character easier to identify with.” You can read a little more at the source link. [Cineplex]

5.) Finally, here’s Bruce Willis in Twi-Hard: With a Vengeance.
