2012 Fall Movie Preview: December Brings Hobbits, Djangos and the Hunt for Bin Laden

DECEMBER 14

Like the 7th, December 14 is light on the number of titles, but heavy on anticipation. This weekend could, in fact, be one of the biggest of the year as Universal unleashes Les Miserables and Warner Bros. delivers the first film in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy.

To begin, the Oscar-winning director of The King’s Speech, Tom Hooper, brings the latest adaptation of the 1862 French novel by author Victor Hugo to the big screen. Les Miserables has been seen on stage and screen in a countless number of adaptations and Hooper has assembled quite the ensemble for his rendition, written by William Nicholson (Gladiator, Elizabeth: The Golden Age).

The cast includes Anne Hathaway as Fantine, Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, Sacha Baron Cohen as Thenardier, Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thenardier, Eddie Redmayne as Marius and Samantha Barks as Eponine as they venture to 19th-century France where ex-prisoner Jean Valjean, hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert after he breaks parole, agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s young daughter, Cosette, a decision that will change their lives forever.

And second is the film that is sure to be a worldwide phenomenon. Whether you see it in 2D, 3D, IMAX or 48 frames per second you are likely to go see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and who would blame you. Peter Jackson made what is arguably one of the best film trilogies of all-time with The Lord of the Rings and with him returning to Middle Earth it is sure to be an event not many will want to be left out of.
