Next week’s box-office stories will likely be dominated by The Amazing Spider-Man, but it’s Ted and Magic Mike that are making all the noise with this pre-Fourth of July three day.
Ted has exploded out of the gates with $20.2 million on Friday (including $2.6 million from midnight screenings) and is expected to finish with over $50 million in its first three days at the box-office. It should also prove to be successful beyond this weekend considering it offers up a nice R-rated alternative to Spider-Man and audiences are walking away giving the film an “A-” Cinemascore.
The weekend’s fireworks didn’t end there as Warner Bros. has a big hit on their hands with Channing Tatum‘s stripper flick Magic Mike. Bringing in $2 million from midnight screenings alone, the film, which is budgeted at $7 million, brought in a total of $19.4 million on Friday and is expected to top out around $40 million for the weekend. The buzz on it isn’t as big as Ted with moviegoers coming out with a “B” Cinemascore, but considering it isn’t exactly the film most people expected I’d say that’s a good start.
Also opening this weekend was Alex Kurtzman‘s People Like Us in only 2,055 theaters. The curious decision to release it in the middle of the summer schedule is something I can’t really explain, as it pulled in $1.4 million on Friday and will likely settle around $4 million for the weekend with a “B+” Cinemascore from those in attendance, which means it isn’t likely to perform too well overall on a reported budget of $16 million.
In other parts of the world, Ice Age: Continental Drift was released into theaters where it is breaking records according to Deadline ahead of its July 13 domestic release. The film brought in $11 million in its first two days from Wednesday and Thursday openings among only 12 of the 37 international markets releasing this weekend. Hopefully we’ll have more conclusive numbers by tomorrow.
