Friday Box-Office: ‘Think Like a Man’ Looks to Stay #1 While New Releases Fail to Bring in Audiences

Think Like a Man repeating for a second week at #1 is one thing, but the poor performance of the week’s four newcomers is quite surprising, especially is you have a look at some of the estimates RopeofSilicon readers were throwing around for this week’s new releases.

First off, Think Like a Man will top the weekend after $5.5 million on Friday and what will likely end up being around a $17 or $18 million second weekend for about a 46% drop from its opening weekend $33.6 million. In second is also a repeat from last week in the Nicholas Sparks adaptation, The Lucky One, pulling in an estimated $3.9 million for what will likely be a $11 or $12 million weekend (46% drop).

The Lucky One will be competing with the first of this week’s new releases, the Judd Apatow-produced The Five-Year Engagement, which brought in an estimated $3.5 million on Friday, but with an R-rating and a B- CinemaScore (the lowest among the four new releases), I don’t see it finding its way into the top two.

The battle for fourth is among The Hunger Games and Aardman’s latest animated feature The Pirates! Band of Misfits. The Hunger Games pulled in $3 million in its sixth weekend at the box-office with Pirates! pulling in $2.7 million. Looking over predictions made by RopeofSilicon readers on Thursday, Pirates! along with Five-Year were eyed as the weekend’s two favorites, many predicting mid-to-upper $20 million results for the films. With Five-Year eye-balling a $10 million weekend and Pirates! praying for $9 million, this might be the first really disappointing weekend of 2012.

In sixth is the Jason Statham starrer, Safe, which is actually getting some decent reviews, with $2.6 million, just ahead of The Raven with a lackluster $2.5 million. Neither will likely hit $8 million as they battle it out in the basement.

The bright side for Relativity, however, is that while The Raven is budgeted at $26 million, it only cost them $4 million to acquire distribution rights. Just another example of how budget and box-office don’t always dictate a film’s success… at least for the distributor.

I have included Friday’s top ten directly below and will be back tomorrow morning with a full weekend recap. With this weekend being a bit of a downer, I guess we can be thankful next weekend won’t have a similar result with The Avengers already tearing up international territories, just waiting to do the same domestically next weekend.
