Weekend Box-Office: ‘Mission: Impossible 4’ Tops an Unimpressive Christmas Weekend

NOTE:The following top ten does not include Christmas Day openers War Horse and The Darkest Hour as their totals weren’t available yet. I will offer an update once they are, most likely on Monday, December 26.
Once again, the discussion is dominated by how little everything made rather than by which films placed where. Judging by Laremy’s The Hollywood Reporter are trying to spin it toward the positive as Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is on a path to become Tom Cruise’s highest grossing film in years… at least since Mission: Impossible III in 2006.
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 3 Weeks In A Row
Mission: Impossible III brought in $134 million in 2006 with a worldwide tally of almost $400 million. Ghost Protocol has already eclipsed the $100 million mark overseas and as of today is just shy of $60 million domestically. With a reported budget of $145 million the film should prove profitable, but it’s still hardly the kind of massive result at the box-office we’ve come to expect from our blockbusters.
Fortunately it’s still early and next week should again be dominated by the bigger films where we’ll get a better picture of just what exactly we’re looking at. Tomorrow should prove profitable as well as it’s a national holiday due to Christmas falling on a Sunday.
Weekend: $26.5 million (107.5% increase) Cummulative Total: $58.9 million RottenTomatoes Score:93% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #1 and his prediction of $46.67 million was $20.17m off for a percentage error of 76.11%.
Just shy of $80 million at the domestic box-office on a budget of $125 million, I wonder if they’ll attempt to turn this into a trilogy.
Weekend: $17.8 million (-55.1% drop) / Cume: $76.5 million / RottenTomatoes:59% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #3 with $22.59 million, which is $4.79m off for a 26.91% error.
So apparently this wasn’t in 3D? Okay, whatever. The film has now reached just over $50 million, which means it has made about $2 million more than the Squeakquel made in its opening weekend. What gives?
Weekend: $13.3 million (-42.7% drop) / Cume: $50.2 million Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #5 with $15.12 million, which is $1.82m off for a 13.68% error.
I have no idea how to determine “success” when it comes to this film. If I were to base it on Laremy’s $29.14 million prediction I would say it was an awful result. If I was to base it on the fact it’s a rape-infused dark thriller released during the holiday season I guess I could look at it as a positive. At least I can say I’m happy they made it, because twice.
Weekend: $13 million / Cume: $21.4 million / RottenTomatoes:85% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #2 with $29.14 million, which is $16.14m off for a 124.15% error.
It’s not really worth discussing the domestic total for Tintin as the film was obviously going to be more of an international draw where it has now made $239.1 million. Domestically, the amount of money the sequel brings in will be more of a signal as to how the film performed here in the States. So the jury is still out.
Weekend: $9.1 million / Cume: $17.1 million / RottenTomatoes:74% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #4 with $18.52 million, which is $9.42m off for a 103.52% error.
Nevermind how bad this film is, I am still amazed it hasn’t been able to match the $56 million Valentine’s Day made opening weekend.
Weekend: $3 million (-58.9% drop) / Cume: $32.2 million / RottenTomatoes:7% Laremy’s rank: Laremy picked it to finish #9 with $3.01 million, which is $0.0098m off for a 0.33% error.
I’m happy to see a nice little hold for Arthur Christmas, more of you should head out to see what really is the best feature-length animated Christmas movie I have ever seen.

It wouldn’t be Christmas without Edward, Bella and Jacob… at least for a few die-hard Twilight fans. I will say this, if you are looking for an example of what constitutes a blockbuster success these days you don’t have to look any further than the $270.9 million this thing has made domestically and the over $651 million it has made worldwide.

When it comes to the independent opener’s the 3D documentary Pina brought in $62,300 from three theaters for a $20,767 per theater average while Angelina Jolie’s In the Land of Blood and Honey only brought in $18,100 from the same number of theaters.
As I noted in the opening, these totals don’t include the films that released on Christmas day including Steven Spielberg’s War Horse and the sci-fi feature The Darkest Hour so I imagine they will be changing a bit and I will offer a Monday update once I have more information.
