Sony Pictures Classics just announced it has acquired David Cronenberg’s next film A Dangerous Method, which is currently in post-production and is expected to premiere at the 68th Venice Film Festival, which begins on August 31. I, personally, am hoping it will then move to Toronto in September where I will be roosting for about eight days.
The film stars Viggo Mortenson, Keira Knightley, Michael Fassbender and Vincent Cassel and is based on the play by Christopher Hampton, centering on the conflict between Sigmund Freud (Mortensen) and his pupil Dr. Jung (Fassbender). Seduced by the challenge of an impossible case, the driven Dr. Jung takes the unbalanced yet beautiful Sabina Spielrein (Knightley) as his patient. Jung’s weapon is the method of his master and both men fall under Sabina’s spell.
The film is Cronenberg’s first since Eastern Promises in 2007 and he is already at work filming Cosmopolis based on Don DeLillo’s novel centering on newly married billionaire Eric Packer (Robert Pattinson) as he cheats on his wife, is pursued by a stalker (Paul Giamatti), gets attacked by a protester and gradually loses his entire fortune over the course of a single day.
As for A Dangerous Method, it doesn’t yet have a release date, but it is one of my many early Oscar contenders.
