Box-Office Oracle: Dec. 3 – Dec. 5, 2010

It looks like an easy call at the number one position, Disney’s animated Tangled should have enough momentum to catapult it into the top slot. The middle rankings offer a bit more intrigue, bearing in mind that the opening week of December is no friend to the box office. Let’s break it down!
Laremy predicted the #1 movie correctly 4 Weeks In A Row
Only Faster will face a bigger drop. But $800m looks like the absolute bottom for worldwide revenue here, with $900m looking probable. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone‘s worldwide total of $974m? I have no opinion about that, we’ll just have to wait and confer.
Prediction: $20.62 million
Megamind needs to start bringing in international dollars to justify that lofty $130m budget.
Prediction: $6.52 million
This one won’t come close to $100m domestically, which means it will need overseas dollars to bail them out of that $100m production budget. Either that or one hell of a DVD/Blu-ray residuals package.
Prediction: $5.92 million
Sony stockholders could sue for negligence here. The budget was $55m, it won’t sniff anything near that domestically.
Prediction: $5.68 million
The buzz is fading fast on this title. I know because I whipped my completely scientific “buzz-0-meter” out and came away surprised by the results. Still, I’m excited to see Hathaway and Franco host The Academy Awards.
Prediction: $5.36 million
Not screening for press, little marketing, and less than 2,000 screens. Feels like the recipe you’d need to be completely missed and quickly forgotten by the general public.
Prediction: $4.5 million
What did they spend the $24m on? How much do muscle cars cost these days? One thing is for certain, Bruce Tobey isn’t loving what this film meant for his career.
Prediction: $3.24 million
I like that they are still running ads for this title. Decisions like that might keep our economy chugging along!
Prediction: $3.23 million
For the record, I’ve got Black Swan making $380k or so. The desire to see it is there. The ability to do so is not.
Prediction: $2.74 million

How say you? Not much to predict on the new releases, but you can throw out your own 127 Hours or Black Swan call if you’re feeling cheeky. Brad will be here on Sunday to hand out a few attaboys paired with stern (but logical) repudiations if your numbers don’t pan out. Comment early, comment often!
