Trailer for ‘The Debt’ Starring Worthington and Mirren

Yahoo has just debuted the trailer for The Debt directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love) and starring Sam Worthington, Helen Mirren, Jessica Chastain, Ciaran Hinds and Tom Wilkinson. The film is based on Assaf Bernstein’s 2007 Israeli film of the same name. Matthew Vaughn and fellow Kick-Ass co-writers Jane Goldman and Peter Straughan penned the screenplay.

The story centers on Rachel Singer (Mirren), a former Mossad agent who endeavored to capture and bring to trial a notorious Nazi war criminal – the Surgeon of Birkenau – in a secret Israeli mission that ended with his death on the streets of East Berlin. Now, 30 years later, a man claiming to be the doctor has surfaced, and Rachel must go back to Eastern Europe to uncover the truth. Overwhelmed by haunting memories of her younger self and her two fellow agents, the still-celebrated heroine must relive the trauma of those events and confront the debt she has incurred.

Miramax is set to release the film on December 29 and it’s one of the films included in my “The Contenders” as a potential Oscar contender. Give the trailer a watch directly below and make known your thoughts in the comments below.

One thing to note is Jessica Chastain is expected to make a splash on the scene in Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life, but should that film continue to be delayed this may serve as her coming out party as she plays the younger version of Mirren’s Rachel Singer.
