Selling ‘Psycho’ 50 Years Later

Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere points out the following two fan made trailers suggesting how Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho would be marketed today as Universal is preparing to release a new 50th Anniversary Blu-ray edition on October 19th. Wells rightly likes the first one better than the second, which is simply too manic for my taste as it basically copies the trailer made for Gus Van Sant’s 1998 remake.

Take a peek at each and let folks know which one you prefer in the comments.

Wells got on the subject as he was complaining about Universal’s upcoming Blu-ray release of Psycho and its 1.85 to 1 aspect ratio, which is not how it was originally conceived, which was somewhere around 1.75:1. What’s missing? Well, a post at hitchcockwiki.com points out exactly what’s missing, take the following two images comparing the VHS and DVD releases into account:

Sort of alarming eh? Strangely, IMDb only lists 1.85:1 as the proper aspect ratio. I’m not sure why Universal wouldn’t decide to release both versions of the film on this Blu-ray or why they would ever decide to alter the aspect ratio in the first place, but as you can see here information is being left behind. As for the original promotion of the film… How about a 6:30 minute trailer?
