Trailer for Corbijn’s ‘American’ Starring George Clooney

Yahoo has debuted the trailer for one of this year’s more anticipated features, director Anton Corbijn’s The American starring George Clooney as Jack, an assassin vowing his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell. The assignment, as specified by a Belgian woman, Mathilde, is in the offing as a weapon is constructed. Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto and pursues romance with local woman Clara. But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.

The film is Corbijn’s follow-up to Control, a little seen, but very good film based on the life of musician Ian Curtis. The American is set to be released by Focus Features on September 1 and is already listed in my “The Contenders” section as an early Best Picture contender.

Have a look at the trailer below and weigh in with your thoughts in the comments. I didn’t watch the trailer myself, but I skimmed it for an image to include with the article and couldn’t get over how much I love the one I included above. The use of space and the look on Clooney’s face says a lot.
