Clip and Additional Plot Info for Woody Allen’s ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’

Thanks to a heads up from The Playlist we’re alerted to the first clip and some additional plot details from Woody Allen’s upcoming feature You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, which will debut Out of Competition at the Cannes Film Festival prior to its September 23 release.

Up until now the plot for the film has been rather guarded, but with the film set for Cannes something had to be made available for the press pack, which is when Sony Classics released the synopsis describing the film as having a little romance, some sex, some treachery and apart from that, a few laughs. The story follows the lives of a group of people whose passions, ambitions and anxieties force them all into assorted troubles that run the gamut from ludicrous to dangerous.

The clip below features Naomi Watts and Antonio Banderas as Sally and Greg respectively as they do the standard Allen walk-and-talk. Considering I try to go in with as little information as possible I didn’t watch, but in an interview with BlackBook, Watts let loose a little bit of information saying, “[Josh Brolin] is a writer and things aren’t going well for him and our relationship. I want a baby and he doesn’t. There’s one twist in it that I don’t want to go into, but he’s trying to try to find a way to start his second book. He’s written one and he’s kind of scared of being a flash in the pan. I’m like, ‘Okay, if you’re not going to give me a baby, I’m going to get my career back. I need something in my life.’ I’ve got this mother who is sort of crazy and into the whole New Age-y thing. She can’t stand my husband because, basically, we’re living off her money. Everyone’s doing mean things to one another. There’s no massive plot.”

Like Kevin Jagernauth at The Playlist, I want to make sure folks don’t misconstrue that “no massive plot” bit at the end. Allen’s films aren’t high concept, they’re human dramas and as such they are more character driven than dominated by a plot.

With that said, check out the clip below if that’s your thing. Otherwise, hang tight as I’ll have a review within a month.
