UPDATE: After posting the image below I have since learned it is an early version of the official poster for The Wrestler. The new, and official, version is the first one listed followed by the early, leaked version.
SlashFilm has found the first official look at the poster for Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, which I finally get to see this coming Tuesday and I am hoping it lives up to the love so many have given it since its festival run.
As of right now, it seems Mickey Rourke is likely to be a lock for Best Actor, but I am wondering if the film stands a chance. Kris Tapley at In Contention recently gave a small report after seeing Revolutionary Road this weekend calling it a “real Best Picture contender” with “a dynamic blend of powerhouse performances that won’t likely be forgotten any time soon.” That’s what I call high praise, but it also means The Wrestler won’t be sliding into that Oscar spot.
I have attached the poster below and for those out of the loop, here is the synopsis for the film as well. It hits theaters on December 17.
Centers on Randy “The Ram” Robinson, a 1980s-era star pro wrestler who has become a burnt-out shell of his former self. After he has a heart attack during a small-time match, a doctor tells him he could die if he fights again. In an effort to build a new life, Robinson takes a job at a deli, moves in with an aging stripper and tries to build a relationship with her son. But the prospect of a rematch with his old nemesis the Ayatollah proves too tempting to resist, even if it means risking his life.
