Almost a Top Ten: My Pick of Six Scary Flicks

Them (Ils) (2006)

This film is only 76 minutes long and is available on Netflix Instant Play and I loved it. I don’t want to give anything away about the killers because that is part of the film’s charm, but it is based on a true story and details of the investigation are referenced at the end of the film. I can’t see how anyone can’t get at least a little bit freaked out watching this film. My only suggestion is to do your best to go into this film 100% cold, turn off the lights and let it play.

The Ring (2002)

I am sure this will be the one film on this list that definitely will have people saying, “Huh?” Primarily because it has become fashionable to hate on this flick after the awful sequel and for whatever other motivation people have to dislike it, but this film seriously creeped me out the first time I watched it and I know the two friends I watched it with felt the same way. I gave the film another watch before putting this list together and it ended up being a decision between this flick and Alejandro Amenábar’s The Others and in terms of thrills I think this one just wins out.

The Orphanage (2007)

This is a fantastic film in that it scares at the same time it taps into a variety of other emotions. Geraldine Chaplin who plays Aurora (pictured above) is the center of a great little “contacting the dead” scene, but the scene at the end when Laura (Belén Rueda) plays the “knock, knock” game is a fantastic twist of fear mixed with compassion. I love this film for those kinds of moments.
