Box-Office Oracle: Mar. 7 – Mar. 9, 2008

#1 movie predicted correctly: 5 Weeks in a Row
Clearly this is an easy pick. The one thing that gives me pause is that last year, on this exact weekend, 300 cleared $70m. Can’t be as much buzz for this one, can there?
Estimate: $33.3 million
Other sites are far more bullish on this title but I think it’s an example of poor programming. A G-rated Martin Lawrence film? Exactly what audience is that? So I look for a dismal box office return here.
Estimate: $13.0 million
Yeah, it let me down in a big way last weekend. My little brother called and complained that he hated it. That’s the problem with doing this for a living; people take your opinion way too seriously. Thankfully Dre liked it. So I’m pretty sure I’m right again.
Estimate: $7.5 million
It did pretty well last weekend. The thing is (and this goes for all the titles) that the competition is crazy weak. So even putrid films can only fall so far because the people want to see movies, no matter the time of year. Quite a scheme Hollywood has set up.
Estimate: $6.8 million
It’s only getting 1600 theaters. And the trailer gives away waaaaaay too much. This is a decent flick though, you could do worse on a Sunday afternoon.
Estimate: $5.6 million
I even think this hurts College Road Trip. I mean, do kids want to see a movie about CGI monsters or a movie about a girl visiting colleges? I don’t have a kid but the answer seems clear to me.
Estimate: $4.9 million
This cleared $7035 per theater last weekend for an eight million dollar haul. People love period pieces, it’s as simple as that. Still, you owe it to yourself to check out The Tudors. Much more “quality” there.
Estimate: $4.1 million
I’m headed to Austin, TX in about four hours and I haven’t packed yet. So… pass!
Estimate: $3.7 million
If only I could wait in line now for Step Up 3-D. Oh man, and I want to see it in IMAX too. You think I’m joking? I am not joking. I’m crazy for the dance these days.
Estimate: $2.9 million
You’ll note that last weekend, after the actuals came in, Juno dropped out (just like I said). I don’t have a real point other than “I was right.”
Estimate: $2.6 million
