Box-Office Wrap-Up: Jan. 11 – Jan. 13, 2008

Whew. That was a close one. It was a much bigger week than expected for both Bucket List and First Sunday but at least they came through with the right order for poppa. Let’s break this down.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 9 Weeks In A Row
My theory is that there are way more old people than anyone knows about. The problem is they hide indoors all day… so you don’t notice ’em until they show up for Bucket List.
Result: 19.5 million (My rank: #1, $4.9m off)
This has a 17% rating on RT, but I don’t see how. It’s not a classic, but for what it is it’s pretty funny. I guess it comes down to how you feel about Tracy Morgan.
Result: 19.0 million (My rank: #2, $5.4m off)
3. Juno
This weekend was Juno‘s chance to win a weekend. Looks like it’s not going to happen. I was telling a friend about this yesterday and he asked “Yeah, but is it a drama?” I had to tell him no, because it’s not like teen pregnancy is addressed in any meaningful manner here.
Result: 14.0 million (My rank: #3, $2.4m off)
Now that’s a beautiful pick. B-Luv mentioned I’d be giving myself a pat on the back… well, what other choice do I have here? Fun fact: I saw an advertisement for Nat Treas II this weekend that mentioned “The #1 movie in America THREE weeks in a row.” While that’s technically true they omitted the tomato cans they’ve beaten up on. Try winning in June!
Result: 11.4 million (My rank: #4, $0.9m off)
I just want to pick this right once before I cease to be. Not much to ask.
Result: 9.1 million (My rank: #7, $2.7m off)
This was a quality pick, the Sunday family dollar lifted Chipmunks to foil my five for five attempt. That’s probably a good thing, I was feeling a little too proud.
Result: 8.1 million (My rank: #5, $.3m off)
What the heck is this doing up here? Something must have slipped. Since no one cares about this movie I’d like to take the chance to plug the Golden Globes Live Diary this evening. Tune in for some fun, certainly more fun than Matt Lauer alone is going to provide.
Result: 6.1 million (My rank: #10, $.4m off)
Ditto. Where is Dungeon? Where is Veggie Tales? It almost seems like not having theaters, reviews, or marketing dollars hurt the two smaller new releases.
Result: 5.0 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
There you are! What happened here? Where did all the crazy veggie people go? It’s only been three years, surely some of them still roam free.
Result: 4.4 million (My rank: #6, $3.4m off)
It didn’t do nearly as well as I’d hoped – but look out next weekend. It takes home three Golden Globes this evening which will give it a needed bump.
Result: 4.3 million (My rank: #8, $1.9m off)
