MTV has released the following announcement saying that this year’s MTV Generation Award will go to Adam Sandler:
The “2008 MTV Movie Awards” pays tribute to Adam Sandler with the coveted “MTV Generation Award” for his amazing contribution to Hollywood and for entertaining the MTV audience for years. From generation to generation, Adam Sandler has kept fans crying with laughter since bursting onto the scene in MTV’s “Remote Control” then onto “SNL” and his early film roles and cult classics such as Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer, Big Daddy and now this summer’s eagerly anticipated You Don’t Mess with the Zohan in theaters June 6. The “MTV Generation Award” is the MTV Movie Awards’ highest honor, acknowledging an actor who has captured the attention of the MTV audience throughout their career. Past recipients include Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey. Hosted by Mike Myers, the “2008 MTV Movie Awards” airs LIVE on June 1st at 8:00pm/7c from the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, CA.
“A 30-something waterboy, a broken-hearted 80s wedding singer and a rejected hockey player turned pro golfer … now that’s an impressive resume,” said Van Toffler, President, MTV Networks Music, Logo and Films Group. “On Sunday our audience will present Adam with the MTV Generation Award for all the years he has captured, entertained and made us laugh our heads off.”
Sandler is currently in production on Bedtime Stories for Walt Disney Studios and was most recently seen in a starring role opposite Kevin James in Universal’s comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry. Previously, he has been seen in Sony’s Reign Over Me and the box-office hits Click and The Longest Yard. He also starred in Spanglish, 50 First Dates, Anger Management and Punch-Drunk Love, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination. Sandler’s other credits include Coneheads, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, Big Daddy, and Mr. Deeds.
Sandler served as producer through his Happy Madison Productions on Click, The Benchwarmers, Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo and Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star, Strange Wilderness and the upcoming films The House Bunny and Paul Blart: Mall Cop. He executive produced Grandma’s Boy, The Animal, Joe Dirt, The Master Of Disguise, The Hot Chick and Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo.
As previously announced, Coldplay and sexy singing and dancing ensemble, The Pussycat Dolls will take the stage to debut new music and deliver eagerly awaited live performances. Additionally, Sarah Jessica Parker, Ben Stiller, Will Ferrell, Jack Black, Steve Carell, Lindsay Lohan, Liv Tyler, Mark Wahlberg, Seth Rogen, Robert Downey Jr., Jennifer Hudson, Anne Hathaway, Edward Norton, James Franco, Emma Stone, Rumer Willis, Katharine McPhee, Brendan Fraser, Dwayne Johnson and Danny McBride join the growing list of presenters at the “2008 MTV Movie Awards.”
Up for the coveted golden popcorn at the “2008 MTV Movie Awards” are “Superbad,” leading the way with five nominations, and “Juno,” receiving four nominations. Also vying an award are “Enchanted,” “Transformers,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” and “Knocked Up” with 3 nominations each. MTV has also partnered with some of the most popular UGC video sites, including Photobucket, MySpace, Daily Motion, Break, Buzznet, Heavy and FunnyorDie to give anyone and everyone with a creative vision their chance to shine in a celeb-filled arena. Finalists for the “BEST MOVIE SPOOF” will be flown to Los Angeles to attend the “2008 MTV Movie Awards” where one will be crowned the winner.
The “2008 MTV Movie Awards” will be available to a potential viewing audience of more than 1.4 billion people via MTV’s global network of 64 channels reaching 559.8 million households around the world as well as through syndication. In addition, its convergent programming & content will reach the entire interactive community, via more than 180 MTV digital media properties around the world.
