Johnny Depp surprised his fans on the streets of downtown San Diego on Thursday as they were en route to the 2026 Comic-Con. The actor dressed up as Ebenezer Scrooge to promote his upcoming movie, Ebenezer, the latest adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novella A Christmas Carol.
Depp, leaning on a cane and sporting a top hat, stepped out in a full Victorian getup as he met with fans who cosplayed as some of his most memorable on-screen characters. The actor went up to one cosplayer who dressed up as the titular character from Depp’s 1990 film Edward Scissorhands.
“I’m terribly sorry for you,” Depp told the fan, speaking in a British accent while in character as Scrooge. The actor then quipped, “How do you… How do you go to the WC? The toilet!” The remark drew laughter from the crowd as Depp added, “Terribly sorry for your accident.”
Depp also had some memorable interactions with a Captain Jack Sparrow cosplayer from Pirates of the Caribbean and a Willy Wonka cosplayer from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. “Vogue magazine! I see you,” the actor told the Wonka cosplayer. They chatted for a moment before Depp snatched his bag of candies as Ebenezer and handed one to a Jack Sparrow cosplayer.
“Are you the candyman?” Depp quipped, teasing the fan with a candy. “I’ll feed it to you,” the actor said. However, he flipped the candy into his own mouth and walked off, leaving the fans laughing.
Depp’s upcoming movie, Ebenezer, is directed by Ti West. It also stars Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Tramell Tillman, Ian McKellen, Daisy Ridley, and Sam Claflin. The movie is scheduled to be released on November 13, 2026.
