Anne Hathaway’s latest dramatic turn is heading to streaming. After a limited theatrical run earlier this year, the A24 character drama will make its HBO Max debut soon, giving subscribers another chance to catch one of 2026’s most talked-about original films.
Anne Hathaway’s Mother Mary arrives on HBO Max next month
As per Warner Bros’ press release, Anne Hathaway’s Mother Mary is all set to make its HBO Max debut on August 21. Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker David Lowery, the movie follows Anne Hathaway as a world-famous pop icon gearing up for a long-awaited return to the stage. However, just as the spotlight comes calling again, old wounds reopen when she crosses paths with her former best friend and longtime costume designer, Sam Anselm, played by Michaela Coel.
Instead of a typical behind-the-scenes music drama, Mother Mary digs into complicated friendships, emotional scars, and the personal cost of fame and creativity. Beyond Hathaway and Michaela Coel, Mother Mary brings together a stacked supporting cast that includes Hunter Schafer, FKA twigs, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Atheena Frizzell, Isaura Barbé-Brown, and Sian Clifford.
Behind the camera, David Lowery teamed up with producers Toby Halbrooks, Jeanie Igoe, James M. Johnston, Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo, and Jonathan Saubach to bring the project to life. The film was released under the A24 banner.
Mother Mary definitely got people talking, but not everyone walked away feeling the same. Anne Hathaway’s performance and the film’s bold visual style won plenty of love, while its unusual storytelling split audiences right down the middle.
As of writing, it holds a 70% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.5/10 rating on IMDb. The box office told a tougher story. The film brought in just around $3 million against a $20 million budget during its theatrical run, putting it among A24’s smaller earners this year.
With its HBO Max debut on the horizon, the movie now has a fresh chance to connect with a much larger audience.
