Days of Thunder 2 has finally received some good news. With a lot of fans longing for the Tom Cruise-led cult classic’s sequel, the latest announcement from Paramount will give them a lot to cheer about.
What is the Days of Thunder 2 update?
Paramount recently announced that the sequel to Days of Thunder will now be directed by Jonathan Levine, per The Hollywood Reporter. Levine has previously worked on projects like Warm Bodies and 50/50. He has also garnered some significant hype for his upcoming David Corenswet film, Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story.
This comes as a huge update, as rumors about the sequel getting underway had been circulating for a long time. The original iteration of the sports action drama was released back in 1990. Its plot centered around a not-so-good car driver, Cole Trickle. The movie follows Trickle as he gets hired by a veteran racer to join a NASCAR team.
With the project getting the green light from Paramount, Tom Cruise will also be involved in the production this time, alongside the original producer, Jerry Bruckheimer. Speaking about the direction,
This time around, Will Staples has been vested with the responsibility of scripting the movie. Staples has a history of working on high-octane action projects. He wrote the video game Call of Duty 3: Modern Warfare. He also co-wrote Without Remorse, which starred Michael B. Jordan.
However, there has been no update about the plot of the upcoming Tom Cruise sequel. There is also no definitive news as to when the project will get underway.
Days of Thunder garnered a lot of praise from fans for its excellent action sequences. And now, with racing movies claiming the spotlight (like Jerry Bruckheimer’s F1 in 2025), Paramount is expecting a similar reception for their upcoming film.
