Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Sparks Fears Marvel Is Repeating a Major Star Wars Mistake

Marvel Studios has finally dropped the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. While the much-awaited trailer generated massive buzz, it has also sparked debate among fans, with many worried the MCU could repeat a controversial decision from Star Wars.

What Star Wars mistake are MCU fans afraid Avengers: Doomsday will make?

In the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, Robert Downey Jr.’s character does not take off his mask at any point. However, his voice reveal led some fans to worry that Marvel could have Doctor Doom spend much of the film without his mask. This would be similar to the controversy surrounding Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, frequently removing his helmet in The Mandalorian and Grogu.

Some fans felt that it should not have happened, while others speculated that Pascal’s casting influenced that creative decision. Likewise, Doctor Doom is traditionally depicted as rarely removing his mask in the comics. But with RDJ taking on the role, fans worry the MCU could follow a similar path.

@MrSuperJay wrote, “Nah Dr Doom looks legit!! But I already know they gon force him to take his mask off just cause it’s RDJ playing him.” @DJWarnerStage pointed out, “Doctor Doom is not supposed to take his mask off. Even if he did his face is mangled beyond recognition. So if they actually do doom justice HE WONT.” @tomwanderer had similar opinions as he said, “I just have to laugh how they’re setting up Doctor Doom to be this super intense villain when really he’s gonna spend 3/4ths of the movie mask off and just be RDJ quirk chungusing everywhere.”

The first Avengers: Doomsday trailer features several superheroes teaming up against Doctor Doom, who is looking to unleash a multiversal war. One of the trailer’s biggest reveals was the return of Chris Evans’ Captain America to the MCU. Avengers: Endgame last showed Steve Rogers retiring to live a life with Peggy Carter before returning as an elderly man.

Additionally, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Kathryn Newton, Simu Liu, Sebastian Stan, Anthony Mackie, Pedro Pascal, Letitia Wright, Patrick Stewart, Florence Pugh, and more reprised their respective superhero roles in the first trailer.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release worldwide on December 18, 2026.
