The live-action Moana remake takes a completely different approach to its post-credits content than the beloved 2016 original. Fans who stayed after the animated film’s credits will notice a major change in what Disney chose to include this time around.
Live-Action Moana remake has no post-credits scenes
The live-action Moana remake does not feature any post-credits scenes. Thomas Kail directed the film, which Walt Disney Studios releases in the United States on July 10, 2026. The movie stars Dwayne Johnson as Maui and Catherine Laga’aia as the titular character.
The original animated Moana from 2016, however, did include extras during and after its credits. Polynesian art scrolled alongside the credits, and one of the last images showed Wreck-It Ralph in a cameo appearance. The film also featured a bonus scene and a whispered Samoan phrase after the final Disney castle logo.
In the animated film’s post-credits scene, Tamatoa the crab appeared stuck on his back. He complained about not receiving any help from anyone nearby. He then joked that he would get assistance if his name were Sebastian and he had a cute Jamaican accent.
The live-action remake carries a budget of $200 to $250 million. Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller wrote the screenplay for the new adaptation. Lin-Manuel Miranda returned as songwriter after missing Moana 2 due to scheduling conflicts with Mufasa: The Lion King.
The film currently holds a 36% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 70 reviews. Metacritic gave it a score of 45 out of 100 based on 30 critics. Box office projections estimate a $60 to $65 million domestic opening weekend from 3,875 theaters.
Disney originally scheduled the live-action remake for release on June 27, 2025. The studio delayed the film by one year after announcing Moana 2. The July 10, 2026 release date coincides with the 10th anniversary of the original animated franchise.
