Robert Downey Jr. ended the Thanos vs. Doctor Doom debate by declaring the clear winner in his opinion. The MCU veteran returns to the franchise in Avengers: Doomsday this year.
Robert Downey Jr. on who’s stronger between Thanos and Doctor Doom
Downey made a surprise appearance at the Avengers: Infinity War panel at SXSW London, where the film was screened. The discussion featured the directors Anthony and Joe Russo, as well as stars Anthony Mackie and Winston Duke.
Shortly after the Iron Man star entered the stage, Joe Russo asked him a question posed to the former by a fan a few weeks ago: “Who’s more powerful, is it Thanos or Doom? (via CBR).”
“Doctor Doom,” the 61-year-old responded before quipping, “I do have the green pop screen on my mic, don’t I?”
The Oscar winner followed this up by noting how they can neither surpass nor build on the storytelling of Infinity War and Endgame.
Promising to restore fans’ faith in the MCU, which declined during Phases Four and Five due to the apparent dwindling narrative quality, he said, “We’re literally zeroing out the board, and we’re gonna try to earn your trust and respect all over again, and with the likes of these fellows, I think we got a pretty good shot.”
His comments seemingly echo what Joe Russo earlier revealed at SXSW London. During the headline session, Building Artistic Universes Without Borders, he said the upcoming film will return to “phase zero.” He elaborated, “This is starting over from scratch. We want to make sure everybody feels like this isn’t leaning on anything from the past” (via The Hollywood Reporter).
Avengers: Doomsday premieres in theaters across the United States on December 18. Notably, multiple international territories could reportedly screen the film earlier.
In addition to directing, the Russo Brothers co-produced with Marvel Studios via their production banner AGBO. Meanwhile, Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron co-wrote the screenplay.
Part of MCU’s Phase Six, this film and its direct sequel, 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars, will wrap up the Multiverse Saga.
