Screenwriter Jeremy Slater has mapped out a long-term future for the live-action Mortal Kombat franchise. Thus, revealing that he has already earmarked specific video game characters for potential Mortal Kombat 4, 5 & 6.
Jeremy Slater has new characters planned for Mortal Kombat 4, 5, 6
The writer has spent his youth mastering the fighting game in arcades and on the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. He penned the script for Mortal Kombat 2, the sequel now playing in cinemas. While the current film introduces Johnny Cage, Kitana, Baraka, and Shao Kahn, Slater is not rushing to deploy every fan favourite at once.
Slater confirmed that a deep bench of kombatants awaits their live-action debut. However, many will not appear until much later entries. “I have dozens of characters that I want to bring into live action,” Slater told Variety. “Some of them are on deck next, and some of them are being saved for a hypothetical 4, 5, or 6. In success, we will get to as many of the classics as we possibly can, but we always want to be careful to never overload the audience.”
Producer Todd Garner maintains an ongoing dialogue with the Mortal Kombat fan base to gauge which fighters audiences most want to see. Slater stressed that he weighs that feedback carefully against the narrative demands of where the story is heading. He knows exactly which new characters join the fray in the already-planned Mortal Kombat 3, but declined to name them.
Furthermore, Slater’s ambition reaches beyond a standard trilogy. He pointed to long-running action series as a model for what Mortal Kombat could become. “Nothing would make me happier than this becoming like New Line’s version of ‘Fast and Furious,’ where every couple of years you get an amazing Mortal Kombat movie, but then there’s also room for spinoffs in between where we can take some of these side characters and give them more room to flourish or play with different genres,” he said.
For now, fans will have to wait to see how it pans out for Mortal Kombat 4, 5, or 6.
