Ryan Gosling Won’t Accept ‘Dark’ Roles Due to Family Concerns

Ryan Gosling‘s appearances in upbeat movies like The Fall Guy and Barbie are no accident, as the actor has provided an insight into the film roles he selects. Here’s why Gosling no longer takes any “dark” roles.

Ryan Gosling reveals he stopped taking ‘dark’ roles

In a recent interview, Gosling revealed that has stopped taking “dark” roles because he considers the impact that his darker performance could have on his family. While darker roles could be perceived negatively by his wife and daughters, his performance in movies like La La Land have proven to have a positive impact.

Speaking with The Wall Street Journal Magazine, the Ken actor confirmed that he purposefully rejects darker roles which might put him in a tough space. He said that he doesn’t “really take roles that are going to put [him] in some kind of dark place.”

Gosling went on to reveal that he considers his family’s needs and discusses every role with his wife before accepting it. The actor couple has two daughters under 10 years old. They’ve become a priority for Gosling while taking on new characters, as he “tries to read the room at home” and makes decisions “with [his] family in mind first.”

Ever since the actor starred in 2016’s La La Land, his mindset began to change. He explained:

“I think La La Land was the first. It was just sort of like, ‘Oh, this will be fun for them, too, because even though they’re not coming to set, we’re practicing piano every day or we’re dancing or we’re singing.’”

Gosling’s role in Barbie aligned with his children’s “interest in Barbie and their disinterest in Ken,” again showing how he considers family when selecting roles.

Recently, Gosling has displayed his comedic prowess in the role of a live-action Beavis (from Beavis & Butt-Head) which went down a storm during The Fall Guy premiere.

Post The Fall Guy, Gosling is confirmed to appear in Project Hail Mary. He could potentially return for a sequel to The Gray Man on Netflix as well.
