Award-winning actress Amy Adams is in talks to star opposite Jenna Ortega in Sony’s 3000 Pictures’ planned Klara and the Sun movie adaptation, Deadline reported.
According to the outlet, once a deal closes for Adams, filming for Klara and the Sun will commence almost immediately. Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi is set to direct the project, with Heyday Films’ David Heyman producing alongside Waititi and Garret Basch.
What is Klara and the Sun about?
Based on Kazuo Ishiguro’s 2021 sci-fi novel of the same name, Klara and the Sun — set in a dystopian future — centers on an artificial friend named Klara, who’s created to help people suffering from extreme loneliness. When she gets purchased to accompany Josie, a teenager who suffers from a mysterious illness, she will embark on a quest to save Josie and her loved ones while at the same time discovering what it truly means to live and love like a human.
The novel’s synopsis reads: “Here is the story of Klara, an Artificial Friend with outstanding observational qualities, who, from her place in the store, watches carefully the behavior of those who come in to browse, and of those who pass on the street outside. She remains hopeful that a customer will soon choose her. Klara and the Sun is a thrilling book that offers a look at our changing world through the eyes of an unforgettable narrator, and one that explores the fundamental question: what does it mean to love?”
Ortega, who plays the titular role in Netflix’s Wednesday, is set to portray Klara. Adams, on the other hand, is in negotiations to portray Josie’s mother. The six-time Oscar-nominated actress has starred in various highly regarded features, including Arrival, Her, Catch Me If You Can, Enchanted, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Nocturnal Animals, and American Hustle, among others.
The book’s author will serve as the film’s executive producer.
