Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone Have Made a New Movie With Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons

Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone have made a new movie together, AND, which also stars Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, and Margaret Qualley.

In a recent interview with Brazilian outlet Omelete, per World of Reel, cinematographer Robbie Ryan revealed Lanthimos and Stone shot AND together while the Poor Things VFX team was finishing post-production.

“It’s a very, very exciting film,” Ryan said. “There are three stories and it is very different from Poor [Things]. He wrote that one with Efthimis [Filippou], with whom he wrote The [Killing of a] Sacred Deer. It’s still Yorgos, but there’s a different sensibility.”

Ryan continued, “[Poor Things’] post-production took so long, and with COVID shutting down some projects, we had a window to shoot. Yorgos said ‘I don’t want to watch special effects every day, let’s make another movie!’”

What else do we know about Lanthimos’ AND?

Deadline first reported that Stone, Plemons, Dafoe, and Qualley will star in Lanthimos’ AND in September 2022. Plot details remain under wraps, though the film will be released by Searchlight Pictures and produced by Ed Guiney, Andrew Lowe, Kasia Malipan, and Lanthimos.

“Working with Yorgos continues to be a highlight for us at Searchlight, and this is yet another truly original project that sets his work apart,” said Searchlight Pictures presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield. “Working again with Emma, Willem, Jesse and Margaret as well as Element and Film4 is just the icing on the cake.”

Lanthimos and Stone’s most recent collaboration, Poor Things, hits United States theaters on December 8, 2023. Along with Dafoe and Qualley, Poor Things also stars Mark Ruffalo, Ramy Youssef, Christopher Abbott, and Jerrod Carmichael.

“From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe),” the official synopsis reads. “Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.”
