Margot Robbie Expects Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn Will Be Incredible

While not officially confirmed, rumors continue to swirl that Lady Gaga will be playing Harley Quinn in the upcoming sequel to Todd Phillips’ Joker, Joker: Folie à Deux. Should she take on the role, then the current Harley Quinn in the larger DC Universe has no problem with that.

Speaking to MTV News in a recent interview, Margot Robbie — who has played Quinn in three films — was asked about how she’d feel seeing another actress taking on the role. For Robbie, it wouldn’t bother her at all, as that’s what she’s always wanted for the character.

“It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning is all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way, like, Macbeth or Batman always gets passed, you know, from great actor to great actor,” Robbie said. “It’s kind of like someone gets to do their Batman, or someone gets to do their Macbeth or someone, you know? And I feel like in not so many cases are there female characters.”

Robbie went on to say that it’s been “an honor” to be able to help build a strong enough foundation for a character like Harley Quinn to now be played by other actors, and said she thinks Gaga would do a fantastic job.

“It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing,” said Robbie. “I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”

Joker: Folie à Deux will once again be directed by Todd Phillips. The film will feature the return of Joaquin Phoenix as he reprises his Oscar-winning role as the titular DC villain. He will be joined by Grammy-winning superstar Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn, making her the latest actress to portray the beloved DC character, following Margot Robbie and Kaley Cuoco.

Further details about its plot are still being kept under wraps, but the movie will reportedly feature some musical elements. Production is expected to begin this December. The Joker sequel is scheduled to make its debut in October 2024, which currently pits the sequel against no direct competition.
