Taika Waititi Gives Update on Planned Star Wars Film

One of Disney’s planned upcoming Star Wars films is set to be written and directed by Taika Waititi. While it’s unclear just when production on the project will start, Waititi did reveal that it won’t be anytime this year.

“Not this year,” Waititi said in an interview with TheWrap when asked if he’d be starting the project soon. “I’m going to be in New Zealand from August until the end of the year with Our Flag Means Death and Time Bandits and during that time I will still be writing. I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.”

Information on Waititi’s film is still unknown, although in past interviews the director has stated that he would like to make something completely new to the world. However, in an interview with The New York Times, Waititi also acknowledged that he’s still trying to come up with the idea, which will decide how they proceed.

“I’m trying to write the Star Wars idea at the moment,” said Waititi. “I’ve got to see how that goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even.”

The future of Star Wars films has been a hot topic of conversation as of late, especially due to the rise in popularity of the many Disney+ television series currently in the works. As far as films go, the only two films currently in the works for Star Wars are Waititi’s movie, and the Rogue Squadron film that director Patty Jenkins is set to film at an unknown time in the future. A planned trilogy from Rian Johnson had also been announced but seems to be on the backburner as of now.
