Josh Brolin Recalls Almost Being Cast as Batman in the DCEU

Josh Brolin is no stranger to the world of comic book movies, having played the iconic villain Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Cable in the Deadpool franchise. However, Brolin was also up for the role of another legendary comic book hero recently as well.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Brolin revealed that he came pretty close to being cast as Batman in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

“That was interesting to me. That was [director Zack Snyder’s] decision. That wasn’t my decision,” Brolin said of being approached to play Batman, before noting that what he liked about the idea is that it was a big risk. “Because something that is set up to not work at all or to work flyingly, I like those odds. I like playing with those odds. I’m like, ‘Am I the guy who’s gonna make it all fail?'”

Brolin also touched on what he would have done with the role, calling his Batman “older and more raspy” version of the Dark Knight. “Again, that was before Deadpool 2. It would have been the older, more raspy, for lack of a better word. Honestly, that would have been a fun deal and maybe I’ll do it one day when I’m 80,” said Brolin.

Of course, the casting eventually went to Ben Affleck, who starred in a variety of films as Batman, and who will also appear in 2023’s The Flash film, which is reportedly the final time he’ll appear as the character.
