47 Ronin Sequel in the Works, Anna Akana and Mark Dacascos to Star

A sequel to the 2013 cult hit 47 Ronin is in the works at Universal, with Anna Akana (Jupiter’s Legacy, Ant-Man) and action film star Mark Dacascos (Brotherhood of the Wolf, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum) set to star in the film.

The sequel will also star Teresa Ting (Orange Is the New Black), Mike Moh (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Dustin Nguyen (Little Fish), Yoshi Sudarso (Buffalo Boys), and Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians). The film will be written by John Swetnam and first-time feature film writers Aimee Garcia and A.J. Mendez, who fans might know as her time in WWE under the name AJ Lee. Garcia and Mendez are both co-writers of the comic book series GLOW, as well as Dungeons & Dragons: At the Spine of the World.

“We are excited to continue the story of these ancient Japanese samurai warriors with this next chapter of the 47 Ronin film franchise set in modern times,” says Glenn Ross, General Manager and Executive Vice President, Universal 1440 Entertainment. “This all-new production features some of today’s most talented international action stars. We think fans worldwide will be thrilled with director Ron Yuan’s vision of diverse and inclusive samurai warriors.”

The sequel film is already in production in Budapest and will take place “in the modern world where samurai clans have continued to exist in secrecy for centuries,” according to the synopsis of the film. The film will debut on non-theatrical platforms worldwide in 2022 and will be presented by Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production arm of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group.

The original 47 Ronin starred Keanu Reeves and was released in 2013, and while not initially a big success, the film grew a cult following that has maintained to this day.
